Feasibility Study: Design and Manufacture of Concept Forceps
Business: DTR Medical
Result areas: Feasibility Study
Technology: Computer-Aided Design (CAD), Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Plastic Injection Moulding Simulation
Since 2005, DTR Medical has successfully manufactured sterile single-use products for the Medical Industry. One of the R&D activities focuses on product improvement to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage to bring production back into Wales.
The ASTUTE team was asked to perform a review of alternative materials which could be used in the existing product range. The ultimate objective of the company was to replace the forged steel forceps with polymeric without sacrificing mechanical performance. Manufacturing considerations, such as injection moulding simulations were also investigated.
The project highlighted the need to maintain the use of steel for the load-bearing components within the forceps, whilst other components could be produced more economically via injection moulding. The project has led to further studies by DTR Medical, to investigate pressing and stamping technologies which could potentially result in a local supply chain.
“ASTUTE provides superb support for SMEs. The breadth of experience and technical expertise provided by the team, as well as their access to a wide range of equipment and resources, has helped us drive our technical development forward. Whilst we are not yet in a position to bring manufacture of our products back to Wales, this project has moved us several steps closer.”
- Andrew Davidson, Managing Director, DTR Medical Ltd.
Due to focus on Smart Specialisation, some of the expertise areas in the case studies might not be covered in the current ASTUTE 2020.
