This three day course details the scientific background associated with the destructive and non-destructive testing techniques currently deployed for metal, ceramic, polymer and composite assemblies, in a variety of market sectors.

Who Should Attend?

The course is aimed at people who wish to gain an understanding of the key role that testing plays in ensuring that the combination of material and joining process is sufficiently robust in a range of market sectors. Typical candidates include both technical personnel and engineers.

Course Aims

To provide a good understanding of the interrelationship between material properties and joining methodologies, and the test methodologies that have been developed to ensure that fabricated assemblies are ‘fit for purpose’ in a broad range of market sectors.

Learning Outcomes

An essential understanding of the range of key joining processes that are widely deployed for metal, ceramic, polymer and composite structures. Course delegates will be able to select the most suitable joining technique for a variety of materials, and determine the appropriate test methodology to relate the results obtained to in-service requirements.

Course Programme

  • Why test? The value of testing.
  • Metrology and the development of standards
  • The selection process for materials and their fundamental attributes - ferrous alloys, non-ferrous alloys, ceramics, polymers, composites.
  • The crystal structure and mechanical properties of materials
  • Joining processes for standard grades and specialist products, and their associated test methodologies - including a detailed review of appropriate standards.


  • The microstructure of steel and metallurgy of welded assemblies
  • Welding defects and in-service failure mechanisms
  • The joining of aluminium and titanium
  • The joining of plastics, composites and ceramics
  • Nondestructive testing - including in-service inspection processes, reliability engineering, dye penetrant, ultrasonics and radiography.

Duration & Assessment

3 days plus assessment. 2 hour written exam.
