Materials & Manufacturing Academy M2A

Materials & Manufacturing Academy M2A

Find out how the Materials & Manufacturing (M2A) can benefit your company:

What is the EngD?

It is a four year, PhD level qualification which encompasses a taught component and is focussed on an industrial problem.

How is it structured?

Technical skills are delivered in semester 1 of the first year. Upon completion of the modules in January, students are free to engage in research

What research areas are covered?

Anything related to materials or manufacturing

How does the EngD link with industry?

Each project must have a partnering company

How much does the company have to pay?

£9000 per annum (£36,000 over 4 years)

Does the student receive a stipend?

Yes, £20,000 per annum

Are fees covered by the grant?

Yes, the grant covers fees

Can overseas students enrol on the scheme?

No, due to restrictions imposed by the funders, students must have a UK / EU passport

Who funds this scheme?

The Materials and Manufacturing Academy receives funding from WEFO, EPSRC, and industry

Can students enrol anytime of the year?

No, they need to enrol in September / October to attend the courses

What other restrictions are there?

The student must move to within the Convergence of Wales at the point of enrolment on the scheme (Swansea is in Convergence)

What are the entry requirements?

A 2:1 degree in a STEM subject or a masters level qualification

How are the projects advertised?

We ask for a company approved project descriptor of no more than 1 page which describes the aims and objectives of the project. We advertise on our website and across various job sites

When do you start recruiting?

As early as possible – we would like to start recruiting students in January 2016 for the October start. This is inline with graduate recruitment but does mean talking to companies early on

Who owns the IP?

These projects are heavily subsidised by the public purse so the university owns the IP. However, a reasonable and fair agreement has been drawn up that allows effective transfer of IP if required. We have been doing this for years and have never had a dispute.

How does this scheme build a strong cohort feel?

Through peer to peer learning during the taught component and through seminars and events

Who do I need to contact in order to be involved?

The M2A is managed by Dr Ian Mabbett I.mabbett@swansea.ac.uk
